7 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Metal Carport

Buying a metal carport is a bigger decision than most people realize. Get it right and you have a structure that protects your vehicles and property for decades. Get it wrong and you are stuck with something that does not fit, does not hold up, or does not meet your local code requirements.

Here are the seven questions you should have answered before you commit.

1. What Is the Exact Size I Need?

Measure the vehicles or equipment you plan to cover — and then add at least two feet on each side. A 20-foot wide carport feels tight when you are trying to open truck doors. A 22 or 24-foot width gives you real working room.

Also think about height. Standard carports are 6 or 7 feet at the eave. If you have a lifted truck, a camper shell, or a boat on a trailer, you may need 9 or 10 feet of clearance.

2. What Roof Style Do I Need?

There are three options: regular (rounded), A-frame (boxed eave), and vertical. For a simple carport in a mild climate, regular is fine. If you get significant rain, snow, or debris, go vertical. The upgrade is worth it.

3. Do I Need Sides or Ends?

An open carport is the most affordable option. But if you want to block wind-driven rain, reduce sun exposure, or add a layer of security, you can add side panels and end walls. You can even fully enclose a carport and turn it into a garage.

4. What Are My Local Permit Requirements?

Some counties require a permit for any permanent structure. Others have size thresholds. Call your county building department before you order. A good dealer — like Rescue Metal Designs — can help you understand what documentation you need.

5. What Is the Ground Situation?

Metal carports can be installed on gravel, dirt, asphalt, or concrete. The anchoring method changes depending on the surface. Mobile home anchors work for gravel and dirt. Concrete requires anchor bolts drilled into the slab. Make sure your dealer knows what you are working with.

6. What Gauge Steel Is Used?

The frame and panels are rated by gauge — the lower the number, the thicker the steel. A 14-gauge frame is stronger than an 18-gauge frame. Ask specifically about the tubing gauge and the panel gauge. Do not assume.

7. What Does the Warranty Cover?

Ask for the warranty in writing. A quality metal carport should carry a manufacturer's warranty on the steel panels and a separate warranty on the paint finish. Know what is covered, for how long, and what voids the warranty.
